BACKGROUND: The growing prevalence of depression has become a major public health problem. There is limited evidence regarding the relationship between dietary behaviors and depression. The present study was designed to evaluate the association between dietary behaviors and depression score. METHODS: A total of 933 Iranian adolescent girls aged 12 to 18 years were included in this cross-sectional study. Depression severity score was assessed using a validated Persian version of Beck's depression inventory. Dietary behaviors were pre-defined and assessed in ten domains using a standard questionnaire. To investigate the association between dietary behaviors and depression score, the linear regression analysis in crude and adjusted models was used. RESULTS: 67.7% of participants had no or minimal depression symptoms and 32.3% of participants were categorized with mild-to-severe depression symptoms. There were significant inverse relationships between main meal consumption (Beta: -0.141; 95% CI: - 3.644 to - 1.000; P = 0.001), snack consumption (Beta: -0.100; 95% CI: - 2.400 to - 0.317; P = 0.002), regular meal consumption (Beta: 0.23; 95% CI: 0.13-0.42; P = 0.001) and food chewing (Beta: -0.152; 95% CI: - 2.279 to - 0.753; P = 0.03) with depression score. These associations remained significant after adjustment for confounding variables. In addition, frequency of intra-meal fluid intake (Beta: 0.096; 95% CI: 0.288 to 1.535; P = 0.004) and spicy foods consumption (Beta: 0.076; 95% CI: 0.098 to 1.508; P = 0.02) were directly associated with depression score in the crude model. These significant relations were disappeared in full adjusted model. No significant association was found between breakfast consumption, intake of fried foods, chewing ability, and tooth loss with depression score (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Significant associations were observed between specific eating behaviors with depression score. Prospective studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Background: Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS) have evaluated several genes related to vitamin D synthesis, metabolism and transport. They have proposed a genetic basis for low levels of vitamin D in the blood. The current study aims to investigate the relationship between certain vitamin D-associated gene variants and vitamin D deficiency in Iranian adolescents. Methods: In this case-control study, the genomic DNA was extracted by Real Time PCR High Resolution Melt (HRM). All measurements were carried out with triple repetition. The following factors were assessed: single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in Vitamin D binding protein (DBP, rs2282679), 7-Dehydrocholesterol reductase (DHCR7, rs12785878) and Cytochrome P450 2R1 (CYP2R1, rs10741657). Results: the genomic DNA of blood samples obtained from 481 adolescents. Participants with hypovitaminosis D were compared with a control group. The average vitamin D level of sufficient subjects (controls) was 44.88±14.01 ng/mL, while subjects who were insufficient (cases) had an average vitamin D level of 7.03±1.24 ng/mL. No statistically significant differences were found in the allelic and genotypic distributions between genders. The SNP frequency in CYP2R1 (rs10741657) and DBP (rs2282679) in the vitamin D deficient group was significantly higher than in the control group (p-values < 0.001 and 0.01 respectively). There were no statistically significant differences in the DHCR7 SNP (rs12785878) distributions between the Vitamin D deficient group and control group. Conclusion: The present study demonstrated evidence of the ability of the SNPs under investigation to predict circulating vitamin D concentration. Further study is needed to better understand if and how genetic factors contribute to vitamin D levels, and certain skeletal-associated disorders in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Many studies with inconsistent results have assessed the association of Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene polymorphisms with prevalence of obesity and overweight. This review aims to provide a summary of the literature evaluating the relation between BDNF genotype and body mass index (BMI). METHODS: A systematic search through PubMed, Scopus, Science direct, Ovid and Cochrane was performed. We included observational studies with cross-sectional and case-control design, which investigated relationship between all kinds of BDNF polymorphisms with BMI, as a representative index of obesity and overweight. Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to assess the quality of included articles. RESULTS: Thirty five studies were included in quantitative synthesis. Analyses were performed separately using OR, ß coefficient and mean. Significant association were documented between rs925946 and BMI (OR=1.12, 95% CI=1.08-1.17, P heterogeneity=0.317), rs10501087 and BMI (OR=1.14, 95% CI=1.04-1.24, P heterogeneity=0.861), rs6265 and BMI (OR=1.13, 95% CI=1.07-1.19, P heterogeneity=0.406), rs988712 and BMI (OR=1.29, 95% CI=1.18-1.40, P heterogeneity=0.602). According to pooled ß coefficient analysis, significant result was only observed in the rs925946 polymorphism subgroup. Pooled mean analysis showed that overall effects for the association between BDNF polymorphisms and BMI were not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis suggests that some polymorphisms in BDNF gene including rs925946, rs10501087, rs6265 and rs988712 can be considered as genetic determinants of obesity.

BACKGROUND: Due to the attribution of fatty liver with some chronic diseases such as obesity, finding a way to control obesity can be useful for the management of fatty liver. This study was performed to assess the effects of Plantago psyllium (PP) and Ocimum basilicum (OB) on anthropometric measurements in people with hepatic steatosis. METHODS: All patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) were enrolled in this four-arm parallel, randomized, and single blind trial. They randomly assigned into four groups receiving (1) OB 10 g/day; (2) PP 10 g/day; (3) mix of OB and PP 10 g/day; and (4) control group without placebo for 12 weeks. Anthropometric measurements were assessed during study baseline and after 12 weeks intervention. The data were analyzed using paired sample t-test for within group and analysis of covariance for between groups. RESULTS: In within group analysis, weight and body mass index show a significant reduction after 12 weeks intervention. In addition, soft lean mass and lean body mass were decreased in PP and mixed of PP and OB groups significantly; another group (OB) shows the same result for mass body fat. Although in intervention groups, we see considerable reduction, between group changes did not demonstrate the same consequences. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study showed that administration of OB, PP, or mix of them for 12 weeks does not affect any of the anthropometric measures in NAFLD.

Recently prevention strategies for breast cancer are focused on lifestyle modification such as diet. Some dietary factors such as Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) can lower the risk of breast cancer, metastasis and some factors concerning this malignancy. Many studies have been established in this field, but their results are inconsistent. Therefore, we evaluated this association based on systematic review among published scientific literature. We performed an electronic search using PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, Google Scholar and Persian database (Iran Medex, magiran) to identify relevant studies. We summarized the findings of 8 papers in this review. Although, three cohort studies were not overall identified a protective effect of CLA dietary intake or CLA content in breast tissue on breast cancer incidence, metastasis and death, one of them showed an inverse association after adjusting for age. Also, among case-control studies a weak inverse association between breast cancer risk and CLA dietary intake and serum levels among post-menopausal women was reported. Besides, a clinical trial showed that some indicator of breast tumor decreased after CLA administration among women with breast adenocarcinoma. Lacking published evidence suggested inconsistent results. So, further well-designed studies are required, particularly in considering the main breast cancer risk factors.
